Iemants and Herbosch-Kiere to build new pontoon at the Steenplein in Antwerp
Smulders, through Iemants, and Herbosch‑Kiere have been awarded the contract by De Vlaamse Waterweg to renew the pontoon at the Steenplein in Antwerp. The project will result in a future‑proof, more accessible transfer point for passengers travelling by water.
The existing pontoon will be replaced by a 150‑metre‑long new structure designed to accommodate the growing use of water transport such as De Waterbus and the Sint‑Anna ferry. The new pontoon will have a wider access bridge, a spacious platform, room for four vessels, and a protective canopy to improve comfort and accessibility for passengers.
The steel construction is being built across Smulders’ facilities in Belgium and assembled at our yard in Vlissingen (the Netherlands). Once completed, the pontoon will be transported via the waterway to Antwerp for installation by Herbosch‑Kiere.
This project is a strong example of what collaboration within the Eiffage Group can achieve, combining expertise in steel construction and marine works to successfully deliver this complex project.
