Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables (NSORe), the joint venture between Smulders and Neptun Werft, was awarded the contract in June 2026 for the construction of the 2 GW LanWin 6 offshore HVDC converter station.
NSORe, in collaboration with Siemens Energy, will build a 2-gigawatt converter station for the North Sea Connector 2 offshore grid connection project, commissioned by 50Hertz. The project comprises an offshore platform and an onshore station. The consortium is responsible for the complete realisation and turnkey delivery: from system design and the procurement of components to construction, installation (onshore and offshore) and commissioning.
Both the topside – the main structure of the offshore platform housing transformers, switchgear and converters that convert alternating current to direct current – and the jacket foundation will be built by NSORe: the topside at the Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock, and the jacket at the Smulders yard in Vlissingen. Siemens Energy is responsible for the high-voltage installations, including the onshore substation.
LanWin 6 is an offshore grid connection project by the German transmission system operator 50Hertz. It is being developed to transmit up to 2 gigawatts of wind energy from a wind farm in the North Sea to the German mainland.
